I spent 29 years in pediatrics, primarily critical care. I have done hospital-based nurse education as well. I have been at USCA since fall of 2012, where I direct the simulation program and teach online leadership, and pathophysiology. I completed my PhD at the University of South Carolina in May of 2018.
In which online degree program do you teach?
Which classes do you teach online?
Leadership & Management, and Pathophysiology
What advice would you give to those considering the online RN to BSN program?
You won't find a better program than USCA. The faculty here are involved and caring and really go out of their way to make your experience pleasant and productive.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in nursing?
As RNs returning for a BSN, our students are already successful nurses. I hope that attaining a BSN will broaden their horizons and opportunities as they move forward in their professional careers.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that nurses face today?
Nursing continues to be challenged by staffing shortages and resource allocation issues. Future challenges include an aging population and the rise in chronic illnesses, which have an impact on morbidity and mortality.
Why did you start teaching?
I started teaching because I was offered a wonderful opportunity to build a simulation program at USCA. I have also always had an interest in how people learn and develop expertise.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Luis
Tell us something that your students might find interesting, something they may not know about you.
In my spare time I like to quilt and garden. I am also an avid reader.
