Why did you start teaching?
I had worked in acute care for many years and taught new employees as well as developed a cardiac rhythm identification class. I have always loved to share my knowledge with others. I later accepted an opportunity to teach fundamental students in clinicals, and I have been teaching for more than 25 years.
What advice would you give to those considering this degree program?
Learning should be lifelong. You should always strive to be the best, and increasing one's knowledge in the field of nursing is one way to expand on the knowledge that is already possessed.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in nursing?
One quality that is important for this profession is compassion for others. In nursing, you meet patients from all different backgrounds who are at different stages in their lives and who may have a multitude of healthcare issues. You can impact their lives when they are most vulnerable. Additionally, critical thinking skills are also very important. Individuals are unique, so questioning and reasoning are invaluable when striving for excellence in healthcare.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that nurses face today?
One of the biggest challenges in nursing today is access to healthcare and the limited number of nurses to care for an aging population.

I have had many challenges and struggles in my life that I overcame to become a nurse. I am a first-generation college student. My motto is that challenges may be stumbling blocks—step over them and keep going. Challenges may seem to be mountains—just go around them, and keep going.
